| "Don't it always
seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone..." The single greatest force for good in shaping the series, it now seems sadly evident, must be Steve Sears. His loss, along with the transference of Liz Friedman and the attention elsewhere of Misters Stewart and Tapert, sent the show into a downward spiral from which it seems unlikely to recover; the abandonment and outright destruction of subtext, the rise of Joxer, an over-reliance on formulaic plotlines and slapstick farce. More anarchic action, little talk, less emotion, and a turn towards religion that could bring them even more trouble than the Hare Krishnas. Let's just give a glance over Mr. Sears' accomplishments. |
Season One: |
Season Two: |
Season Three: |
Season Four: |
Season Five: |
| This is an
extraordinary achievement by a single writer in the fashioning of any TV series. The scope
of it takes your breath away. And the list includes at least a dozen classics by my
reckoning. If we had only The Quest for which to thank Mr. Sears that would be
reason enough to kowtow. And this gentleman among Hollywood writers and producers is now
responsible for our favorite fanfic writer's dream come true. What a Legacy to pass on to
the fandom after the low-point of this fifth season. What a treat it was catching up with season one finally when USA aired the show and viewing The Greater Good for the first time. And the apparent loss of one of our duo. The unforgettable nature of Gabrielle's passion, Xena's quiet courage. The kind of revelatory experience of our characters we came to expect from Steve Sears. He never let us down. Which is his most representative episode? Which means the most to us? The Quest is the key, the Rosetta stone, the heart of the series. I was lying in bed viewing that episode for the first time when what should appear on screen but this lushly romantic, roseate hued, heart-stopping moment where fantasy and reality melded and gave us one of the great seminal (excuse the use of that particular adjective |
| here) moments in series (and TV) history. My head snapped up off the pillow so fast there could've been whiplash. Had I just seen what I thought I saw? Thank heavens for VCRs, rewind and freeze frame. Any denying that the show was essentially a love story between the leads after this was preachment to the deaf ears of the converted. We had seen the glorious golden light. We knew the truth. Autolycus was just as startled as the rest of us. An innocent bystander who got in the way and was blind-sided by true love so powerful and profound it's come |
| back from the other side--again and again. This was an undeniably romantic kiss accompanied with all due emotion, music, setting, glowing Arcadian lustre, subtext became maintext, an unforgettable moment when time stood still, we stopped breathing collectively and any other well-publicized kiss between women designed only to grab ratings paled in comparison ("Party of 5," "Picket Fences," "L.A. Law," "DS9," "Roseanne," "Ally McBeal"). |
| Steve was the only one
who really 'got it,' who evoked it with any kind of consistency. (Missy tellingly in her
first Xena story takes off from this moment...to build her artful and exquisite
tapestry...'was it you, or was it Autolycus?') From that special moment on I knew they
were going to take the subtext seriously. And they did--through Them Bones, Them Bones
as long as he had anything to do with it. For a woman who's waited her entire life to see
an honest portrayal and validation of this very special bond two woman can share, this was
a priceless gift. When in Rome, A Good Day, The Price, are all excellent episodes as well as thoughtful well-crafted morality (in the best, most genuine sense of the word) plays on the actual personal costs of real violence, on one's soul, to one's psyche, its justified use and not just the grosser, more gory, more gratuitous stuff we've been dealt lately. Hard to remember now that the show could ever be this intelligently thoughtful at one time and remain, always, entertaining as well. Now they seem to be going for the lowest common |
| denominator WWF demographic. The same
yahoo Joxer fans who our Ms. Good, who has given so much to fandom, was compelled to
listen to while riding an elevator at the Chicago con as they vocally decried most Xena
fans as 'disgusting perverts.' The show and the characters no longer have the internal consistency that Mr. Sears brought to it and them. This has been the season from hell (since Fallen Angel, appropriately) and we could only vainly wish that when Xena and Gab awoke from yet another apparent death (this plot device is really getting old, boys) that the whole rotten season would've been just another bad "Dallas" dream--even that ludicrous |
| attempt at a series saving device would
not have been any worse than what's happened to the show this year. Selective amnesia.
Sort of reminds one of Remember Nothing, another classic Steve Sears episode and one of the best variations ever on the "It's a Wonderful Life" theme that every series seems to attempt at one time or another. How the world (or a series) hinges and can change on decisions made, little betrayals of self and soul, promises not kept. How significant that Xena chooses to save Gabrielle's soul from hatred and violence rather than keep her dearly beloved brother Lyceus among the living once more. This was a defining moment for Xena and for the show that used to be. Remember everything: The young woman in Destiny who, though severely wounded herself, determinedly dragged her friend up a mountain for help, the Lost Mariner who discovered the true meaning of love by the example of Xena and Gabrielle, The Bitter Suite love that dares to speak its name, extend and clasp hands to cross that bridge, to own up to lies, to speak the truth, the heartbroken conscience-stricken Gabrielle When in Rome comforted by words of love on the voyage home, the teasingly designated Intimate Stranger who toyed with Gabrielle's innocence, the no-nonsense bard who dared to lay down the law to Xena in Past Imperfect, the wide-eyed inquisitive self-sacrificing kid that flung herself in the path of incoming arrows in Hooves and Harlots, the older, wiser, chastened Gabrielle, no less selfless, who instantly recognized Xena's lifeline woven by the Fates when she holds it in her hand and what she is willing to Sacrifice to make sure that thread will not be cut short. The theme of change in Sacrifice (that people can fool you just when you think you have them figured out), Succession (that it's hard to face sometimes), Between the Lines, the ultimate in transition. Them Bones, Them Bones is still relatively intact with subtext. This remains the last true subtext episode in which the characters and actresses behaved as though they cared. Back in the Bottle is the one from which he should've removed his name. The life, the love, the spark is gone from the show. We miss you, man. ¨ |

"Xenarotica." With endless imagination, nothing is impossible in The Nipple

Warning: The stories of this series can be summarized as having two

4) Xena News
| Just For Steve Lady Adrell May 15, 2000 |
| With such writing
credits as The A-Team, Riptide, Swamp Thing,
Hardcastle and McCormack, and most recently Xena: Warrior
Princess, Steve Sears has made quite a name for himself. Though successful in a
traditionally snooty industry, Steve has not allowed his accomplishments to go to his
head. I was fortunate enough to meet him in Los Angeles in the summer of 1999 at the So. Cal XenaFest. He was gracious, and I never saw him without a smile; very friendly and approachable, living up to his reputation of being a man who loves the fans. He has made several personal appearances and participates in online chats with the fans and is always willing to make himself available when he has the opportunity. This is what sets him apart from others in his profession. This is also what has endeared him to fans. That, as well as his open acknowledgement of the subtext in X:WP. Subtext in Xena will always be connected to Steve Sears. For he has been a driving force in writing the strong love relationship between Xena and Gabrielle. For four years he brought us some of the defining moments in X:WP; some of |
| which turned subtext into maintext, such
as the unforgettable kiss in The Quest. Fans have greatly felt his absence from
the show in season five. What has been lacking in the current season of X:WP has been what Steve defined the show as being: A lot of shows have tried but actually missed the point of what we are doing, and fall back on special effects and fighting, and they become an action show. Ive always referred to Xena as a character show WITH action. The exploration and evolution of the characters were mostly overlooked and replaced with less than enjoyable stories that made many fans cringe. The new head writers took a character show that was based on relationships and turned it into a buddy, action show, much like "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys." We did not see that friendship that had nearly been ripped apart by the deaths of their children and brought back together with their fierce love and devotion for each other. Gabrielle became an overnight warrior of all trades, Xena started getting too soft and losing her distinct warrior personality, and the closeness of the girls was most times a "pat on the back" type relationship, if they touched at all. Substance was replaced with slapstick nonsense, heavy with an unevolved Joxer. It seems that only in the last few episodes of this season have we seen a return of character and substance, not seen since roughly about the time Them Bones, Them Bones aired. And still we have yet this season to see the subtext that drew many fans to the show. Fallen Angel certainly seemed to be the last `true' Xena episode of the series. With changes going on in the staff, Liz Friedman going to Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Steve Sears leaving to work on his new show, R.J. Stewart and Robert Tapert working on two new shows "Cleopatra 2525" and "Jack of all Trades", and new head writers coming in to take over the vacant spaces, this last season has been looked on by many fans as the worst season yet. But with all of these elements taking place, Steves departure has been touted to be one of the biggest reasons for the loss of what made the show great; his excellent writing and grasp for who Xena and Gabrielle are and what they mean to each other and what XWP is all about. So the days of the Xena that was made great by talents like Steve Sears seem to be behind us. The changes in the staff have effectively changed the essence of the show as well. But what Steve and the others gave to us in those four years was a show like no other. For that we are truly grateful. Also, we fans have Steve to thank for mentioning Missy Goods name to Rob Tapert to write an episode, which is scheduled to shoot in June and will air in November. The episode, entitled Legacy, marks the first time a fan fiction writer has been given the chance to work on the show. This mans generosity never ceases. When I spoke with Steve and congratulated him on his new show Sheena, he told me that he loved working on Xena, but he had to move on. Sheena has yet to be aired, but with Steve working on the project were sure not to be disappointed. To those people saying that Sheena is a rip-off of Xena, remember that the character of Sheena has been around much longer than our beloved Xena. I suggest giving the show a chance before judgements are made. Heres to Steves continued success! ¨ |

6) Xena: Warrior Princess Episode Guide
Episode Two Chariots of War and Episode Three Dreamworker
Chariots of War
In the second episode the heavily plotted decision to separate the girls is ill
advised. And we are mistreated to the first in a long line of dreary teen crush cliches
for Gabrielle. Though her callow, exuberant youthfulness is awfully endearing. Especially
as she prattles on about the romantic notion of finding one's tree in the forest (a
soulmate by any other name...) --and we know exactly whom that tree turned out to be,
don't we? This becomes just another episodic TV show indistinguishable from, say, an
episode of "Gunsmoke." Wouldn't it have made much better sense to, at the
outset, allow Gabrielle to see the consequences of a life following the W.P.? That is, she
should've been the one forced into a situation of tending her wounded partner and coming
bloodily to terms with just what that might entail. Gabrielle is very much the young
damsel in need of protection, but always exhibiting a brave heart and feisty attitude and
Xena is not, to her stray bout of regret, cut off from family life at all as she will soon
come to realize that Gabrielle is her family. Here we see a situation which deliberately,
it would appear, presented as pattern in Season Five--separate the protagonist team and
the subtext is effectively muted at the least or rendered virtually nil at worst.
And what kind of trees are they? Sturdy apple or supple
willows bending to a cool forest pond, long tresses just touching the mirror surface, the
trunk enwrapped (enrapt?) by a twining and complementary vine of blushing rosebuds about
to open. There's your subtext for today.
Subtext rating: Nearly Nil (by logistics, but a growing warmth trickles
through the shy shared glances and softly spoken confidences. A bond is being forged in
the scenes they do share.)
Dreamworker
A curious and intriguing episode from Steve Sears. The priests of Morpheus kidnap
Gabrielle as an innocent bridal offering to their dark lord. Already there is the deep and
abiding desire to protect Gabrielle, to be willing to risk everything for her. Is Xena
merely facing her fears or facing up to her feelings? As the girls cross over into each
other's dreams they become more to each other than sidekicks. Gabrielle, like any
dreamy-eyed adolescent, plucks flower petals and contemplates the age-old question, yes or
no, which shall it be? At that moment Xena shows up in her dream. They gain sustenance
from this communing of their spirits and Xena is ready to battle Morpheus (the never seen
prospective bridegroom) for possession of her friend's body and soul. The loss of
Gabrielle's "blood-innocence" (and in this context as would-be bride we must
needs naturally extend this to cover her virginity) becomes as even more over-riding
concern for Xena and will remain so throughout most of the series. This very basic
dichotomy between the dark ex-warlord fighting for redemption and her good-hearted,
eternally optimistic voice of conscience in Gabrielle has been all but lost in Season
Five. Xena's words at the opening about killing someone changing everything will come back
to haunt both of them, repeated numbly by the shell-shocked Gabrielle at the end of The
Deliverer and passed on as a hard soul-wrenching lesson by her in A Good Day.
See a trend here? These are ALL Steve Sears' episodes and just what I mean about an
internal consistency. It is one small, but important item like this that typifies his
strength as writer and storyteller and gave the show resonance. In a perfect universe, of
course, we wish the consistent and emotionally honest Mr. Sears could've written the
entire series.
Subtext Rating: One Raised Eyebrow (Meaningful)

Comments on the Amazon Issue
"Great job! I know you guys had a hell of a time getting it out. And while there may
have a few rough spots, they didn't do anything to overshadow the overall quality. Enjoyed
the disclaimer! It wasn't nearly as bad as your frazzled nerves (brain farts!) may have
thought. In fact....it's rather a definitive look at amazons in the Xenaverse, as well as
amazon myth and legend. Also, really enjoyed your take on the axing of LL in NZ...you
really managed to subtlety show how completely foolish they sound! "Xena was not the
only one to feel the sword of discrimination. Sheep do not measure up...." Oh....too
good!"
-- Blue Snow
"Great job on the amazon issue. What an exhaustive
(and probably exhausting) account of amazon facts and lore. You guys did a great job of
weaving together the myths with the portrayals on XWP as well as giving just the right
amount of weight to the fanfic tales. I loved E.J. Rain's feature article. And your use of
the personal in discussing strong women role models was especially engaging. I can' t help
but note that this issue appeared in my mailbox on the day of the great march in our
capital by hundreds of thousands of proud lesbians and gay men. How fitting that you
should also on this day be celebrating the legacy of the amazons who lived life on their
own terms; we 21st century 'warriors' would do well to remember that such a life is also
within our grasp!"
-- Cindy
"Another great Xine. And especially amazing
considering the conditions under which you had to put this one together. Seems like the NZ
tourist board's motto must now be: 'There's nothing about New Zealand you're familiar with
that we like!'. Personally, I think the official image for NZ should be Lucy in full Xena
armor, surrounded by thousands of sheep! Great theme for a Xine, and your Amazon article
was quite interesting and informative. And I liked the way you tied it in to Amazons being
a symbol of positive affirmation for strong women today. Anyway, great Xine yet
again."
