The Passionate Friends Part II

by E.J. Rain

(Continued from last issue)

The 3rd season was the year of the three little words, once they started saying it they couldn't break the habit. It cropped up in just about every dramatic episode afterwards till the stunning cliffhanger finale when Gabrielle made the ultimate sacrifice for the woman she loves with the most hauntingly poignant and powerful image of love and loss and regret captured on Gabrielle's face as she falls into the abyss. The most significant use of the highly-charged phrase comes at the end of Maternal Instincts from Gabrielle with tears in her eyes before they painfully go their separate ways. If this isn't a vow, what is it?

It's not sub-text anymore. It means what it means. NO obfuscation. NO double meaning. These two fine actresses have never shied away from it. They are as courageous as their characters. And it hasn't been done, as is often the case, as a blatant, solely provocative, often sleazy, smirking, winking little aside aimed most expressly at a crude macho audience. But with honor and grace and, even, a surprising sensitivity in an otherwise irreverent series--it could've been done that way just as, or more, easily and become just as much a cause celebre.
I never thought I'd live to see something (kudos to Ellen as well, of course) like this on TV. I am grateful for it. It is a Romantic friendship, a beautiful thing, mythic, resonant,
unmistakable. Someone will write an opera on the subject in the 21st century. They become the new paradigm, succeed Ruth and Naomi as the apotheosis of devoted female friendship. The wind beneath each other's wings. Denial, as they say, is a river in Egypt. And they all flow to the sea, tributaries that may begin as parallel lines, but eventually meet and flow together, commingled, inseparable, as one. We're carried along and away with it and as we reach the destination we know it when we see it.
The deja vu of self-recognition (takes one to know one.) The nature of their love defined: "The one I love most in all the world:" that's no longer sub-text, it's come out into the sunlight and dares to speak its name. ¨

2) Xena Quote/Xena Joke

"Even in death, Gabrielle, I'll never leave you." Xena in The Quest.
Submitted by ArdentTly.

Joke:

How many Gabrielles does it take to change a light bulb?

Version 1
None. They just sit in the dark and bitch until Xena changes it for them.

Version 2
It all depends. If Gabby is by herself or with Xena, then none. For Gabby has her own light, and if by some force of great evil, she loses that inner glow, Xena will be her light.

Version 3
If Joxer is somewhere around, then it will take many, for Gabby's I.Q. seems to drop everytime he is near. Of course, if Lin-Chee is near, he will help guide her back to her path

Lady Adrell's Weekend at the Hercules and Xena Convention in Pasadena
by Lady Adrell

I attended the Hecules/Xena Convention this past weekend in Pasadena, California, and all I can say is, "Whoa!" It was my first convention and the whole weekend pretty much overwhelmed me. What stands out most in my mind are the fans, the MerPups in particular. They are the nicest people you could ever want to know. Always friendly and smiling and howling and having fun. There is a real sense of comradery among them. I am new to the pack, and had posted a few times, but those who recognized me (completely stunning me by actually knowing who I was) were so friendly and made me feel at home, and at home is exactly how I felt. There was a security about PupCentral that I've never felt before, but do hope to experience again in the near future. Orlando?
The convention itself was fun. Seeing the stars up on stage and being themselves
was a real treat, especially Danielle Cormack, Gina Torres, and Kevin Smith. They are the ones that stand out in my mind of all the stars that I was able to see. Okay, Gina I remember more so for what she was wearing but cut me a little slack on that one detail. Their energy and sense of humor were off the charts. For me, they were the highlights of the Con.  It was quite an experience to be in a room full of other Xenites all cheering and shouting as we watched the new episodes of Cleopatra 2525, Jack of All Trades, and Lyre, Lyre , Hearts on Fire. It didn't really matter if you liked the episodes or not, the fact that you were among fellow Hardcore Nutballs was what made the experience memorable.

If you have never been to a Hercules/Xena convention, plan on spending a lot of money. So save up! There is Xena and Hercules merchandise galore! There are good, quality products and some of the cheaper, less expensive merchandise to choose from. I would have bought the place out if I'd had the money to do so.
The events, put on by Creation and by the fans, were outstanding! I attended the Saturday Cabaret and really enjoyed it. The music was excellent, the talent was amazing, and the evening was centered on Xena and Hercules. Truth be known, Xena was much more popular, but that's just between you and me. The two fan events that I attended, the Bard Brunch and the Pup Dinner, were outstanding events that had this Xenite's adrenaline pumping on
overflow. I sadly did not get to attend the Exposure Lunch on Sunday morningbut heard from several different sources that it was as exciting as the rest of the fan events, especially the Twinkie eating contest, which my bud Mary won. Go Mary! At the Brunch I was able to meet and put faces to the names
of those that I've admired for so long. I did some schmoozing at the Brunch but mostly sat back and took in what was going on around me. Brenda and Kate and Shari did a wonderful job at seeing this idea through to the end and making it such a memorable time for everyone. The event that closed out the weekend for me was the Pup Dinner. My hats off to the Pups for this wonderful event. We not only were able to raise well over $2,000 for charity, but we were able to ask the most pressing questions to the Alpha and Debbie, like "When will Dark
Comes the Morning finally be done", and "Who does Debbie see playing Dar and Kerry?" The answers were, "In 2 weeks" and "Lucy Lawless and Gillian Anderson."
If I had to choose between attending the Con or attending the fan events, I'd choose the fan events
hands down! There is nothing like being around the people that show up at these events. If you've never felt part of a family before, then you need to experience the close bond of the Xenite family, it is a special feeling of love and acceptance and wild rapture that fills you with a sense of security and belonging. Thank you to all my fellow Hardcore Nutball brothers and sisters that made this past weekend one that I will never forget and will cherish always. Battle On! ¨

Here's a good site for those who like ubers, but some stories are unfinished. Minerva here knows how to put a good story together. But be warned this is for mature readers only, her writing can be extremely graphic.
