| Subtext and the Single
Mother ArdentTly June 27, 2000 |
| After the second half
of Season Two, it was becoming apparent to both viewers and writers alike that the
hero-side kick angle was more than just that. Both women had come so far in their
interactions with each other as student and mentor that it was a natural progression for
more depth in their relationship to occur. This took the form of friendship in the
beginning. Whether it was the subtle little asides about hickeys or seeing the warrior wake up late in the night and grope for the bard in a shared bedroll or the more pronounced examples found in that more maintext smooch in Quest, one thing was clear: there was some question as to just |
| where this friendship was going. In Season Three, after having scenes of jealousy (Ulysses), and blatant eroticism gone awry (A Comedy of Eros), we see the relationship blossom into something more. In the opening episode of this season, we find the warrior beset upon by furies with only the wee bard to stand between her and oblivion. As expected, the woman is up to the task. But what was so important about this new season, this initial ep, is that not only is the warrior shown to be terribly human but has this normally stoic warrior reaching out for help. This, IMO, is a milestone in the writers' approach to humanizing Xena: Warrior Princess. |
| In earlier episodes, the warrior is seen as having almost superhuman qualities. She's a heroine amongst all women, feared and if not respected then at least admired by the bulk of the men she comes in contact with. Xena seems impervious to the albatross she drags along with her, preferring to work through the pain of her past without really facing it head on. She internalizes much of her anguish, and sets about doing damage control away from those she cares for, espousing all the characteristics of a stoic warrior. It's only in this ep that we see her in total turmoil, the barriers |
| down, and the warrior reaching out for
help. By the time The Debt rolls around, we've discovered more about the recalcitrant warrior, adding depth of character for the somewhat two dimensional bard of Poteidaia to interact with. For the first two seasons the relationship between the two women was very akin to that of a mother and child. By this third season, however, the writers were putting them into situations that had them working off each other in a more balanced fashion - not quite peers per se, but more than just . |
| companions. Soon, the series is less about
how these two women react in a world filled with violence, trying to go from day to day
standing for the greater good, and more about the intricate layers of their
friendship/courtship This third season is just so filled with emotional upheaval, that it's hard to really put it all into context. We ran the gambit from vulnerability, betrayal, self-doubt and declarations of undying and endless love to acceptance, sacrifice and death. When you add to this grand mix the fact that both women lost a child, then the whole series takes on a brand new light. For me, this series really began shedding it's 'just another kiddie television |
| show' skin and bravely went into the
arena of the 'adult socio-drama' genre. The blossoming characters weren't just two
dimensional any more. We cared about them, felt their pain, and agonized with the
decisions that would affect their lives They drew breath in this season, in my opinion,
and became Everyman. For me, XWP was a story of triumph. I'm constantly amazed at the depth of this series. If someone had told me there would be a show about a single mother who, by herown admission, was nothing more |
| than a heartless killing machine, was
forced to give up her child, had to bare the pain and sorrow of losing the father of that
child and therefore any chance at redemption, would try to deny her raging lust for power,
and learn to love again, I would have thought they were talking about a mini series, not a
weekly tv show. But that's exactly what we did get. Xena Warrior Princess is a hero of our times, reflecting our own changing social issues regarding family, love and the ability to rise above the odds and triumph over what seems to be insurmountable adversity. What a boon it is not to have to endure this alone, but to walk side by side with friend, possible lover, and soulmate, all in one compact little bard. ¨ |

Top 16 Reasons Xena and Gabrielle Should Get a Tent
1. Camouflage color hides camp completely from Joxer.
2. "If This Tent's Wigglin' Don't Start Gigglin'"
3. Gods, on materialising, must assume a horizontal position.
4. Doubles as a hot-air balloon.
5. Doubles as a better fitting pair of trousers for that Cyclops whose current pair keeps

6. There is no number six.
7. Doubles as a sail with an advertising logo to help offset X&G's expenses:
"Bacchae Beer Hits The Spot"
8. Xena and Gabrielle can comply when they get too affectionate in Amazon bars and someone
shouts, "Get a tent!"
9. Xena can start snuggling Gabbers under her bearskin without worrying about any water

10. Now Joxer isn't the only one to pitch a tent when Gabrielle prances around the

11. Two words: Poison ivy.
12. Can double as a kite whenever Xena needs to fry a giant.
13. Subtexters can say that Xena's relationship with Gabrielle is "In Tents".
14. When she learns how to pitch a tent, Gabrielle can finally earn her merit badge.
15. Spikes used for tents will no doubt be used by Xena as weapons.
16. Less chance of catching the cold or the flu should it rain on them while they're

***Cated's Note About Spoilers:
All of the following stories are based on an episode from Season Three. I have
made a point to mention which specific episode in each review. Please proceed cautiously
through the list.***
"Another Beginning"
By: S. Derkins
http://lynka.simplenet.com/beginings.htm
(it's really spelled like that!)
***Been There, Done That SPOILER WARNING*** If you haven't seen Been There, Done That, you may not want to
read this story for two reasons: #1, the obvious, and #2, you may find that some things
don't make sense if you haven't seen the ep because the author leaves much of the original
plot
out. You've been warned!
Review by Cated: It's back to the infamous Been There, Done That episode
where Xena has to solve a town's problems or face reliving the same day over and over. In
the midst of it all, however, Xena and Gabrielle step into new waters in their
relationship. The question is, will Gabrielle remember? This story is full of lovin, even
for the meager Joxer the Mighty.
I give "Another Beginning" *** (3 stars)
"Gentle Passions"
By: S. Derkins
http://lynka.simplenet.com/passions.htm

***Sacrifice II (and a little bit of Girls
Just Wanna Have Fun and Fins, Femmes, and Gems) SPOILER WARNING***
Review by Cated: TZ has put together a
great one here. Set after the events of Sacrifice II, Gabrielle finds herself alive much
to her dismay. And her savior, one goddess of love. In return for Gabrielle's life,
Aphrodite makes one simple request - love. With one lustful love goddess, a stunned
Gabrielle, and a mourning Xena, All You Need is Love makes a great read.
I give "All You Need is Love" *****! (5 stars) There's a
little something for everyone!
"At What Cost"
By: TZ

***Sacrifice II and Bitter Suite
SPOILER WARNING***
Review by Cated: Set after the events
of Sacrifice II, Xena makes her way all over Olympus attempting to bargain with
the gods to bring Gabrielle back. On Xena's final attempt to find suitable help, Artemis
leads her to Hercules, who, through the aid of his sister Aphrodite and her bethrothed
Hephaestus, launches a plan to bring Gabrielle back. Now it's up to Xena, with a little
help from Herc and Iolaus of course, to carry out the plan to bring her beloved bard back.
You'll love "At What Cost!" I give this story *****! (5

"Warriors, Schemes, and Dreams"
By: Saturday Whim
http://home.ican.net/~llachlan/WS&D3.html
***Fins, Femmes, & Gems, Maternal
Instincts, and The Quest SPOILER WARNING***
Review by Cated: Set after the events
of the classic ep Fins, Femmes, and Gems, Xena and Gabrielle must face the
feelings that they have been hiding (or not hiding) from one another for so long. With a
little convincing from the Goddess of Love, anything is possible, as the pair will find
out. Nice first attempt from Saturday Whim.
"Warriors, Schemes, and Dreams" is given ****! (4 stars)
"Wounded"
By: Tonya Muir

***One Against An Army SPOILER WARNING***
Review by Cated: After Xena succeeds
in protecting herself and her companion from the ensuing Persian attack, she takes
Gabrielle to a place which will better foster the healing of her wounds...and, Xena hopes,
the healing of their relationship. The Rift has changed everything between them, and now
Xena fights to get them back.
"Wounded" is a touching story of a love reborn. Very nicely written and promises
to be an enjoyable read.

"The Gift"
By: Lawlsfan
http://www.aschweb.com/xenaeyes/fan-fiction/thegift01.html
****Spoiler Warning: This story contains pieces of the plots of A Solstice Carol and the Return of Callisto. Read at your own risk!***
Review by Cated: It's Solstice Eve and
the Warrior Princess is out to find the perfect gift for her bard. Shopping becomes
especially hard when Xena is distracted with a few raiders and an unexpected guest. The
combination of Xena, Gabrielle, a couple of bad apples, and an unexpected Solstice gift
make this story worth the read. Very nicely done.
WARNING: This story is rated PG for graphic
descriptions of a nasty injury, just in case someone, like me, can't stomach much of
anything. <g>

romantic warrior and eager bard on Solstice. Open to all audiences.

"Deception Most Wondrous"
By: Sharona
http://lynka.simplenet.com/deception.htm
When an old "friend" of Xena's seeks her help, she and Gabrielle find themselves
amongst a band of woman warriors, and, more interestingly, followers of Sappho. In order
to protect themselves and Xena's friend, the pair feign new heights in their relationship.
The results - unforgettable! This story has a little of everything: romance, PG13 action
<eg>, adventure, and even a little comedy. Gotta read it!
***Not So Spoiler Warning: This story is a faint take off of the well known
episode A Day in the Life. There aren't many hints of the plot inside the story,
but it's just the feeling I get when I read it. So, proceed to read with caution.***

Saying Good-bye to Chris Manheim
July 6, 2000
Lady Adrell
Season Five saw the departure of the talents of Steve Sears and Liz Friedman, while RJ
Stewart was busy most of the time with "Cleopatra 2525." Now we can say good-bye
to Chris Manheim, who wrote such great episodes such as Maternal Instaincts, A
Family Affair, The Convert, and Altered States, and say hello to a
whole new writing staff.
It will be sad to see Chris go. She did much to help make Xena the magical show it was. I
want to personally thank Chris for her contribution to Xena, and wish her luck in all that
she does!
As for the new writing staff, to keep an optimistic attitude about Season Six, fresh ideas
and writers could be good as long as they keep in mind that Xena: Warrior Princess is a
show about relationships and characters and not a "kill `em all" action show. ¨

6) Xena: Warrior Princess Episode Guide
Episode Eight Hooves and Harlots and
Episode Nine The Black Wolf by Bacchae2
Hooves and Harlots
Centaurs and amazons; a pedestrian title by comparison. The first generally beloved
episode? The introduction of the amazons into what is quintessentially an amazon mythos.
The well-drawn Ephiny and those other clanswomen only fully fleshed out in the fanfic.
Ironically, Gabrielle is back, however, in her femme mode (the peasant dress) as it seems
these eps must have been shown out of sequence, not in the order they were shot. Still
experimenting with her look. And to foreshadow, Gab almost chooses a staff as a weapon
once again and then will earn one as an amazon, becoming one of the girls by pure gut
reaction and hapless default with her heedless heroic (alliterative homage a la the title)
action, something "only an amazon would do for another amazon." Gab, looking
like Rima the Bird Girl is out of her depth, but she'll grow into the role. Oh my, how
she'll grow into it. Once again Xena is struck full-force by Gab's bravery and willingness
to self-sacrifice. And Xena, as in the fanfic sagas (where she is also Consort), becomes
her Champion. Both princess warriors now. Moving in the direction of equals. Would've been
perfect if they had introduced Artemis as well (a missed opportunity from which this
aspect of the series never rebounded) with Gab as her Chosen.
Subtext Rating: It's amazons...'nuff said. If it quacks like a...duck.
Gabby's little stick has a powerful kick. Also some very interesting sexual tension in the
interaction between Ephiny and Xena. Eph is definitely attracted, but what amazon in her
right mind wouldn't be?
The Black Wolf
A run-of-the-mill plot, Spartacus meets Robin Hood, but the inclusion of Salmoneus
makes it fun. "Little Miss Innocent," Gab joins him in the comic relief
for this one. Ah, the lovely styling of the chakram chapeau. Gab is not a fighter yet,
couldn't get arrested for it, despite amazon training, but plucky and clever. She lost her
staff between eps (out of sequence?) but finds one, sort of, in the big climactic fight.
Already it is just plain wrong, it doesn't feel at all right to see Xena ride in without
Gabrielle by her side. The theme seems to be that 'ya gotta have faith in people,'
especially those that are like sisters to you, even if they keep shifting, like that other
Lucy, the football right out from under you. They may just be raising (or lowering) the
bar and daring you on.
Subtext Rating: Now you see it, now you don't. The subtext here is done
with smoke and mirrors, and points to the first of several significant female friendships
from Xena's past. Any hint of subtext is cast into an aside and remembered in the
nostalgia between Xena and her old girlfriend and former playmate.
7) Lowered Expectations Training
| Watching Season Five
Episodes Lady Adrell July 3, 2000 |
| During my first
training session in Issue #10, I introduced you to the Season
Five Rating Scale. Now I will give you some tips on how to actually watch a Season Five
episode so that you can use that scale. Sit back, relax, enjoy, and lower your
expectations with me as I impart some of the L.E. tricks of watching Xena: Warrior
Princess in Season Five.*** As we all know, the major downside to watching Season Five was expecting more than was offered. This is where I first realized that what I needed to do was not expect certain elements from X:WP, elements we have come to admire in the show, such as: good characterization, close interaction between Gabrielle and Xena, Joxer-free eps, dealing with issues and problems from Xena's checkered past, quality substance in the scripts, no boy-toys, and a decent amount of subtext or maintext. When it became apparent to me while I |
| watched Animal Attraction that this was not going to be the case, I began to lower my expectations. I slowly but surely eliminated each important element that I expected to see in this great show. The early episodes can be viewed with just a slight lowering of your expectations, but I would suggest to just eliminate all expected elements to avoid the heartbreak of having to methodically bury your expectations six feet under. If you choose not to do that, then please keep reading. |
| Subtext/maintext has to
go first. If you really look hard you can always find small bits of subtext in every
episode, but you must really stretch to find it, because it is nowhere near the level it
had been in the earlier seasons. To eliminate the subtext element you have to also
eliminate any closeness between the girls. It is a fact that when these two actresses have
a scene together, the sparks fly. Very few sparks flew in Season Five. So you can also
eliminate close interaction between Xena and Gabrielle. As the season begins it would be wise for you `kill Joxer fans to get used to the idea of seeing the lummox in just about every episode. So |
| lower your expectations at this point,
because you wont get rid of him any time soon. However, if you are a Joxer fan, you
are in for a treat because they use him every chance they get. In such a case your
expectations will be raised and you will be happy. You will notice that the next element you will have to eliminate is a big one. The new head writers for the Fifth Season had more talent for bumbling than Joxer. This is very apparent with the dialogue and storylines. Quality substance in the scripts has to go right now! Throw it out the window and just forget about it. Eliminate this expectation beginning with the episode Animal Attraction. You wont see any |
| episode resembling A Day In The Life
or One Against An Army here. No, no. You will instead be served lesser quality
episodes that look much more like the Fourth Season bomb Key To The Kingdom. What
you are looking for now is mindless entertainment in this season-long arc of the Gods
against Xena's baby. POW! BANG! BAM! Woohoo, an action show!!!!! As the season progresses, I can tell you that you should not expect for the many past relationship difficulties between Xena and Gabrielle to be brought to the surface. It seems that what went before was just water under the bridge; both Xena and Gabrielle forget about Hope and Lao Ma and the jealousy and hurt that went along with those two characters, as well as some other trials they faced together. They don't even talk about Hope, and dont expect much from the revisiting of the days of Xena and Loa Ma, because you will be disappointed. The Chin episodes center on other issues. The next expectation that you should lower is good characterization. Just imagine Xena softening into a mommy and Gabrielle stepping up and taking Xenas place as the |
| ultimate fighting machine. Xena Mommy (in her maternal leathers) and the Gabinator end up in this season-long arc as the ultimate buddies. Hercules and Iolaus would be put to shame compared to these two. |
| As the last expectation
to go, the boy-toy factor is a small one. You should be aware that this element goes along
with the fact that their past has little to do with Season Five. Apparently, Xena and
Gabrielle did not remember their vows of love from Season Three, so the boy-toy issue
comes up again in Season Five. So put this expectation on a train with a one-way ticket
out of town because you wont be needing it any more. Looks like that is the last of the expectations to be lowered. Now you can sit down and watch Xena: Mommy Princess and her faithful buddy and protector, The Gabinator, with no distractions. This new show is sure to entertain you with tons of action and fighting like youve never seen before. Dont |
| forget to use the L.E. Rating Scale for Season Five in conjunction with this guide. ¨ |
***Remember that these expectations are solely those of the author. You should use this guide as a way to help you lower your own personal expectations.
8) Feedback
Comments on Issue 12
"<the eternal blending of yin/yang, seeds of dark and light sewn within what is
essentially the other half of a soul.>
"At first I thought that 'sewn' was a misspelling and you meant it's homonym...but I
see it now...and it is beautiful....the knitting together of two halves...a (non)-typo
that makes you stop and absorb this beautiful concept!
"This just about brought tears to my eyes. You know what that image of ROC {as Jan}
does to me anyway, and to weave it so superbly with the emotions evoked by that particular
song {see last issue}...positively heartstopping.
"<Top 10 sexual preferences of Xena and Gabrielle>
Number eight is disgusting, but number 10 makes up for it. And just for your personal
edification, there IS a number six - it's just not easy to see, nestled as it is under
number nine <slurp>.
"All in all a very nice issue. I look forward to your subtext reports especially.
Some of your thoughts pick out different things than I noticed or have read elsewhere...or
maybe it's just that you express yourself so
much more vividly."
-- Cindy
"Bacchae2, I really enjoyed your tribute to season two, the wonderful growth of the
relationship we saw that year, the wonderful sense of fun, the great storytelling, the
substance. Agree with you that this is a
season in which nearly all the episodes are worth seeing, and seeing over again. While
seasons three and four had many signigicant developments and trememdously powerful
episodes, both also had more than a few clunkers and godawful comedies mixed in. Season
two is probably the closest the series ever came to a season of consistant high quality.
"By the way, regarding reincarnation vs. decendents, Steve Sears, who didn't write The
Xena Scrolls, but who did write season four's Between the Lines, has said
that he sees no problem with a decendent also being a reincarnation at the same time.
Which is the feeling I personally got from The Xena Scrolls.
"Cindy, fine fanfic reviews. I was particularly glad to see a story by Rooks in your
selections, a favorite bard of mine. You might be interested to know that Rooks has a
fantastic website filled with not just Xena fanfic and uber, but also thoughtful, detailed
Xena episode reviews, a great gallery of pic downloads, and more. Rooks' site: http://www.njdingle.hispeed.com/xena/
(Rooks is also a computer engineer which is why the site is so well designed).
"About the report of the Argo awards: Was glad to see Fallen Angel got a lot
of well reserved recognition, but Motherhood and LDITE as runners up? Over eps
like Succession, Them Bones and Chakram, or even God
Fearing Child for that matter? How many non-discriminating and masochistic fans are
there in the Xenaverse, I wonder? And this represents the hard core of fandom (Fluff
shakes head). And Motherhood also winning best fight scene, for that rediculous
battle with the gods in the tavern? That was better than the super-kick ass Gab, Xena and
Amarice fight scenes in Chakram, to name just one ep that deserved this honor
more? And the "our daughter" line in Motherhood was the best line in
the entire season?! Again, episodes one through five all have much better lines of dialog,
including some subtext-heavy ones, than this. Finally, a special achievement award for
Tapert? Only if the achievement was to take a great creation and turn it into a colossal
mess! Or for greatest achievement in putting plot above character. Or perhaps for greatest
achievement in promoting fire and brimstone Christianity in a perviously pagan fantasy
series. Ah well, the Argos now get the same respect from me as the Academy Awards, the
Emmys and the Grammys.....none at all."
-- Brian Davis
"One of the things I love about the xine is how you all always so eloquently express
how I'm already feeling. This issue is no exception. Bacchae2's season 2 article
completely encompasses how I feel. The season was such a wonderful blend of silly/serious
and light/dark - yet at it's core was the subtext which had us all sitting up and taking
joyous notice. How marvelous that you've brought back all the lovely memories again. And
you're absolutely right - hardly a throw away ep amoung 'em. I'm only sorry that such a
fun and compelling season seems to be a thing of the past.
"And lastly, how dare Australian Network 10 completely ignore the wishes of their
viewers! This reminds me of Lady A's Josh Becker article in the last xine - ignore the
fans at your own peril. Attitudes like that will ALWAYS get you into trouble. Not a smart
move by the network and I hope it comes back to bite them soon."
